A Lifetime of Expertise: The Story Behind The Carpetman
At The Carpetman, we believe that a great floor is built on a foundation of trust, heritage, and decades of hands-on experience. While our family’s original flooring business was proudly based in Bristol, I have been living and working right here in Wells for the last 15 years, bringing that big-city expertise to our local Somerset community.
Our family-run legacy in the carpet and flooring industry actually stretches back to 1964, but my own journey began in 1979. Working weekends and school holidays for the family firm, I started at the very beginning—spending my first few months mastering the art of the sweeping brush! Those early days taught me that the secret to a perfect floor starts with the preparation. By the time I left school at sixteen, I had already spent three years learning every technical aspect of the trade. I wasn’t just starting a job; I was already a qualified carpet fitter with a deep-rooted passion for the craft. Over the following decades, I had the privilege of working across every corner of the industry. From the precision required for delicate domestic homes to the technical challenges of specialist commercial installations, I’ve handled it all.
However, life occasionally throws a curveball. A significant knee injury eventually forced me to “hang up my carpet stretcher” for a period while I healed. During that time, I transitioned into the retail side of the family business, serving as a salesman, estimator, and shop manager. This 360-degree view of the industry was invaluable; it taught me how to help customers choose the right products and how to manage a business with total integrity.
Once I was fully recovered, my passion for the craft called me back to the tools. Today, operating as The Carpetman, I combine those 45+ years of trade history with 15 years of local service in Wells. When you choose us, you aren’t just hiring a fitter—you’re benefiting from a lifetime of knowledge and a family legacy of excellence.
